Will everyone have a digital twin?
This was one of the questions participants put on paper during Shaping the Future of Sport Through Better Questions, a strategic foresight workshop at GSIC Summit Valencia on 8 October 2026.
Sport Singularity helped facilitate the session using the Question Burst approach. Participants generated, challenged and prioritised questions, exploring how their concerns might evolve over the next five to ten years.
Three areas, many possible futures
The workshop explored three areas:
- Elite performance
- Mass participation and community sports
- Sports technology and analytics
The session brought together Daniele Conte, Associate Professor at the University of Rome Foro Italico, with moderators Tero Villman, Development Manager at the University of Turku, and Tolga Karayel, Doctoral Researcher at the University of Turku.
Making room for better questions
Working in groups, participants examined assumptions about AI, athletes, communities and the use of data in sport. The exercise centred on asking questions and identifying those worth exploring further.
The worksheets captured questions about digital twins, what meaningful performance improvement looks like, how communities define value, and whether the energy needed to support AI will be available.
These questions reveal several directions for further inquiry: the needs of athletes and communities, the decisions technology is intended to support, and the resources required to put it into practice.
A shared contribution
We thank Daniele Conte, Tero Villman and Tolga Karayel, everyone who brought their curiosity and experience to the room, and GSIC powered by Microsoft for bringing the community together.
